Starting from Beijing's 2nd Ring Road, driving to Mutianyu: The Badaling Great Wall takes about 2.5 hours. Unless you're heading out early to avoid the crowds, there’s really no other option for most visitors! If you arrive after 11 AM, you’ll likely end up standing in line for so long you’ll question your life choices. For those who don't want to wait or prefer a more unique experience, the other section of the Wall—Juyongguan, also known as the "First Stronghold Under Heaven"—is a great alternative.

🚩 The West section offers higher elevation and even better views! The recommended route starts with the harder sections and progresses to the easier ones: Begin at the North Gate Tower, then hike to Fire Tower 14 (uphill) — Fire Tower 12 (uphill) — Fire Tower 11 (downhill) — Fire Tower 10 (downhill) — Fire Tower 9 (downhill) — Fire Tower 8 (downhill) — Fire Tower 7 (downhill), finally exiting at the South Gate Tower.

🚸 Towers 14 and 12 are steeper, as there are continuous handrails along the way, so don't be intimidated. Once you pass Tower 12, the downhill steps should be much easier. Take a break when needed, and the sense of achievement when you reach the top is truly rewarding! At a leisurely pace, normally it takes about 3 hours to complete.

The Great Wall of Jinshanling: A Historic and Scenic Wonder

One of the most beautiful parts of the Great Wall is the Jinshanling Great Wall, which is a masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture and is tucked away in the mountains of Luanping County in Hebei Province. Famous for its great views, remarkably intact defences, and comparatively peaceful paths, Jinshanling provides a good experience that blends natural beauty with history. Hikers and photographers love this spot because it provides a breathtaking view of the Great Wall's majesty.

An Overview of the Great Wall of Jinshanling

General Qi Jiguang oversaw the restoration of the Jinshanling Great Wall during the Ming Dynasty after it had been initially built during the Northern Qi Dynasty (550–577 AD). It is roughly 10.5 kilometres long and has some of the Great Wall's most recognisable watchtowers and fortifications. In contrast to other areas, Jinshanling has kept a large portion of its original architecture, providing guests with a genuine experience of the Wall's past.

The Factors That Make Jinshanling a Must-See Travel Destination

Jinshanling is special because it achieves the perfect harmony between natural beauty and preservation. Jinshanling is an excellent destination for those seeking a peaceful, immersive experience because it receives less tourists than more crowded locations like Badaling. Its location offers sweeping views of the nearby mountains, and the Wall's winding path creates breathtaking, scenic panoramas. The juxtaposition between Jinshanling's restored areas and its rocky remnants appeals to both history buffs and adventurers.

The Jinshanling Great Wall's exceptional beauty was further highlighted when National Geographic named it one of the top 10 locations to enjoy fall.

🚂 Transportation tips to Jinshanling Great Wall

Take the suburban train S501/S503: Beijing North/Qinghe/Changping North – Gubeikou. The price is 10-12 yuan (surprisingly, this route doesn’t show up on Gaode Map, so check it out fast!).

From Gubeikou station, take a taxi to Jinshanling, about 12 kilometers away, with a fare of 40-50 yuan (make sure to book a DiDi yourself, don’t get tricked by the high-priced taxis at the station exit). If you’re traveling in a group tour, it’s only about 10 yuan per person. Seats on the train are first come, first served. Alternatively, you can take the direct shuttle bus to the scenic area, which costs 50 yuan for one-way. When you factor in the train + taxi, it’s the most economical way to get there.

The Must-Do Experiences at Jinshanling Great Wall (Including Route Guide)

💫 Sunrise
You can't miss the sunrise at Jinshanling! After entering through the main entrance, take the small path to the Hao Han Stele (Picture 5), then continue up to Shakouling (Picture 6). After about 40 minutes, you'll reach the best sunrise viewing point: the Big and Small Jinshan Lou. If you're staying further away, head out by 5 AM; if you're staying at the foot of the mountain, 5:30 AM should be fine. Don't forget to bring a flashlight!

🏜️ Sunset
The sunset here is absolutely breathtaking. Trust me, make sure to venture deeper into the area. The most beautiful views are only accessible to those who dare to go further. When the surroundings are empty and you climb up an almost vertical ladder to a beacon tower, out of breath, and look back at the scene, you'll be left in awe. The vast mountains, rolling clouds, and the endless sky—this quiet land has remained unchanged for centuries.

🗺️ Route
I recommend taking the East Line, as it offers the most scenic views. Enter through the Middle Gate, head up the brick tower, and make your way to the East Five-Eye Tower (where the brick wall inscriptions and the Kirin Shadow Wall are located). Then exit through the East Gate. Make sure to get to the East Five-Eye Tower!
