China produces and uses so much bamboo (竹子) that the country is sometimes referred to as the Bamboo Kingdom (竹子王国). 40% of all known bamboo species in the world are grown in China, so it’s not surprising that China grows more bamboo than any other country in the world. Today, approximately one fifth of the global supply of bamboo is grown in China, with Sichuan and Fujian being the provinces with the highest total area of bamboo cultivation.

Bamboo in China through the ages Bamboo has an incredibly long history in China. In fact, its use dates all the way back to the 11th century BC. Throughout China’s history, bamboo has been used to create food, transportation, weaponry, housing, instruments, books and more!

Lala was a wonderful host with a charming team at the workshop!

Our bamboo weaving activity was one of our favourite afternoons in Chengdu! Lala met us at Peoples’s Park and took us to the bamboo weaving workshop. We learnt a bit about bamboo first and then got straight into making our cool bamboo panda design! It wasn’t easy but the team there were super kind and helpful in ensuring we were successful and finished the design. I highly recommend this activity if you like hobbies and crafts and want to try something different in this city! Lala was a brilliant host and also gave us restaurant tips for Chengdu. Thanks Lala and co!

Fun and original activity; a must do.

Fun and original activity to do in Chengdu, beside visiting pandas like everybody does. The activity takes place in a small business leads by profesional women. You will have a guide to find the place. When we did the activity, we had the opportunity to chose between 2 levels of bamboo weaving difficulties. We took one of each and kept them afterwards. It's a good memory to have from Chengdu. Snacks were served. The hosts/guides were also kind and helpful regarding the organization of the rest of our trip. I truly recommand if you like arts and crafts or if you want to encourage local businesses lead by women. :)
